How is dog food calculated?

We start with resting energy requirement (RER): 70 × body weight in kilograms0.75. We apply estimated life-stage and activity factors, then divide food calories by the calorie density shown on the package. For example, 800 kcal per day ÷ 3.5 kcal per gram is approximately 229 g per day.

Individual dogs vary. Treat this as a starting estimate and adjust based on weight and body condition with your veterinarian.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Dog feeding FAQs

How much should I feed my dog each day?

Portions depend on weight, age, activity, body condition and food calorie density. Enter the details above for an initial estimate and monitor your dog's response.

How many meals should an adult dog eat?

Many healthy adult dogs do well with two meals daily. Puppies often need smaller, more frequent meals.

Can I use this calculator for a puppy?

Yes, as a starting point. Puppies have higher growth-related energy needs and should eat an appropriate growth diet. Consult your veterinarian about their feeding plan.

Should I measure food in cups or grams?

Grams are usually more accurate. Cups vary by food shape and density. If your package lists calories per cup, enter grams per cup to convert accurately.

What if my dog gains or loses weight?

Reassess body condition and portion sizes. Unexpected weight changes, pregnancy or medical conditions warrant veterinary guidance.
